The path report should be back tomorrow or the next day, and I truly hope it is normal. Although a rapidly growing uterine mass is suspicious for a sarcoma (cancer of the uterine muscle), it is much more likely that this is a leiomyoma, commonly called a "fibroid." These are benign and are far more common than sarcomas. Sarcomas represent only 5% of uterine cancers. However, they can be very difficult to treat. If the worst-case situation develops and you have a sarcoma, here are some thoughts:

*Have the path report reviewed by an expert in gyn pathology. Sarcomas are very tricky to diagnose.

*Expect to undergo a chest x-ray, and perhaps a CT scan of the chest and possibly abdomen.

*Obtain a referral to a gynecologic oncologist to determine if you need further surgery (to remove lymph nodes, etc).

*The gyn oncologist will help you decide if frequent pelvic exams, radiation, or chemotherapy is best. Again, sarcomas are tricky, and there is conflicting information about which therapy works best.

I will keep you in my thoughts.

Sincerely,
