Who hates cold and flu season????From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 10 Jan 2000 22:40:11 -0600 (CST)
I've had this stupid cold for about 3 weeks now (which was on the heals of a cold I got over Thanksgiving), and the last week has been pretty awful for the coughing that wasn't relieved by robitussin DM. Last Thursday, I started using some promethazine/codeine cough syrup (with the approval of my OB and pediatrician) and that has certainly reduced the frequency and intensity of the coughing. The urgent care doc on Saturday confirmed that the cough syrup was okay to continue. But in the course of this, I think I have strained the muscles around my ribs on the right hand side. This is causing excruciating pain when I cough, sneeze, or breathe deeply -- like my ribs are being torn out. I can also feel the strain when reaching or lifting. I am trying to minimize the coughing with cough drops, and alternating the codeine and robitussin. I am nursing a 7-moth-old baby, so I want to be careful about what I take for medicine. What is the best way to reduce the pain in my ribs? How long should I self-treat this pain before seeing a doctor? And how long is it okay to let the cough go before going back to the doctor? Thanks, Andrea
