Doctor touching breasts during examFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 10 Jan 2000 16:45:20 -0600 (CST)
I had a little bit of an uncomfortable moment at the urgent care this weekend and just wanted to see if this was normal or strange. The doctor was listening to my lungs since I was there with an URI. He listened on both sides on the back. But when he listened from the front, he actually pressed the stethoscope into the breast tissue. The hand that was holding the stethoscope was cupped over my breast and his hand was actually touching parts of my breast. I was fully dressed, so this was all through my clothes -- I would have come unglued if this had been a bare breast. My past experience has been that most doctors take great care to avoid touching the breasts except to deliberately examine them. And I've never had anyone put the stethoscope on my breast to listen to my lungs or heart. Is this just a different technique, or does it sound a little strange? This doctor was not American, so I wondered if it was just a difference in training and practice. Also, can you really hear the heart and lungs well through clothes? Thanks, Andrea
