The first 1-3 periods can be unusual - long, short, heavy, light, red, brown, etc. I usually consider the following criteria as "flags" to call - bleeding closer than 21 days apart on a routine basis over a 3 month period, bleeding heavily longer than 10 days and bleeding so heavily that you go through 3 pads, fully soaked, in a half hour and this continues for a few hours. Sounds heavy but not disastrous. If you're concerned, of course, call the doctor.
