OB/GYN Exam Question (First Time)

My best friend complains of severe pain during both her period and the time she ovulates. She's tried to go to the OB/GYN to see about treatment but they were unable to examine her because her hymen's very intact and the doctor was afraid she'd bleed alot and be in pain if they tried to force the exam. She's 28 years old and needs a pap test at the very least. Has anyone ever heard of/dealt with a problem like this? I was thinking there might be doctors available who specialize in seeing younger women and would have equipment that would be more comfortable for her.

Also, does anyone know what painful ovulation can be a symptom of?

Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.
