Conditions after delivery and complications

I had my first child at 24 in September last year('99). My delivery was followed with a pulmonary embolus whose treatment then brought about a vaginal wall haematoma. Surgery followed to aid in removing the clots that were forming but then the surgical cut itself started to hold the blood. It was severed and a "pack" inserted to let the cut heal open and to let the blood drain out freely. I was recieving tests for any possible infections during the time and was on antibiotics, iron and pressure tablets afterwards.

I understand the reason for the flow that I have had afterwards and the length of time that it took to clear up. My question is, should I still expect some unusual discharge now. I don't know how the natural discharge for a woman varies after childbirth and I have simply resolved to wear panty shields all this time thinking that it may still be some sort of drainage occuring. It's not a bloody discharge but rather more mucus like.

Also, my first period after delivery(*12 weeks afterwards) was extremely painful, I was experiencing pain on my 4th day that was worse than any 1st day pain I ever can remember-and the flow was just as bad...is this usual??

And no, I have not been sexually active in the period of time from my delivery till now.

I know that my situation was filled with complications and that you-being not my attending ob/gyn can only give me a general reply but even that is appreciated. I am a bit nervous about approaching my ob/gyn with my questions and am even now still pondering whether I should switch doctors because of the discomfort I feel approaching him with questions like this when most of the time I just feel that I'm taking up his time or being a pest that he has to worry himself with sitting down and explaining this stuff to when he obviously has a busy schedule, plenty of patients and is very stressed out and tired already.

Thanx <Alison>
