Re: Policy re: Fetal genderFrom: James S Smeltzer MD (gaperina@mindspring.com)Sun Sep 26 21:04:08 1999
Dr. Rana, Dr. Vikram Dogra, a long-time friend and research colleague, and now a first-rate radiologist, gained his imaging interest when he ran a hospital in Delhi. He told his patients they were having boys even when they were not. Evidently many families now fly to the US for this "service" - which can result in many terminations for females. The ostensible reason for this is the social burdens of the family of a girl towards her husband's family. The law is a reaction to the sex-based abortions that were going on. It does not stop with immigration for many. I had one couple who asked for and received an age-related amniocentesis for cash rather than a targeted sonogram, and infrequent event in my practice. They disappeared from care when they discovered that this was to be their third girl - whom they thought they could not afford. They never said so, probably to spare my feelings, but I think they had an abortion. Knowing that a couple is Hindu blinds me to the baby's sex. It is so paradoxical to me that a female or under-caste can be head of state, that many if not most Indian physicians are women, but the stigma and burden of female sex should be so great. It causes families to consider abortion rather than the burden of a girl. This burden comes from a traditional system based on a religion that holds life - all life - sacred. I do not understand this culture, but I certainly understand that law! Jim Smeltzer, MD

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
