Re: OB VideotapesFrom: Allen Worrall (jworrall@alaska.net)Fri Sep 17 13:52:15 1999
I document the prenatal scans I do on SVHS tape. At the end of the exam, if the patient wishes, I will make a 4 or 5 minute scan on their VHS tape, for them to take home. I ask them if they want it narrated or not narrated. I also ask them if they want it in gray scale, or the gold/orange colorization that I like. If they did not bring a tape because they did not know we would scan for them, we have tapes available which we sell them at our cost. We tell them their third party payer will not pay for the tape. I receive unsolicited short VHS tapes from various vendors. I erase these and if I get the impression that a young couple would like a tape but cannot afford it, I will tape their 4 or 5 minutes on that tape and let them have it free. I do not think there is any increased medical/legal risk to doing this. I have a low volume ultrasound practice, and rarely do cases back to back. I can appreciate that many practices are very high volume, one case after another all day long, plus emergencies. I am sure in a practice like that it is not so easy to take an extra five minutes to make a tape or determine gender. Joseph A Worrall MD RDMS

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
