Gosh, that is simple. I ask if they want to know. About 20 percent say they do not, and in that case I do not look, since I don't care. In these cases (the few who do not want to know the gender) I tell them I cannot be responsible if the gender flashes across the screen and they see it.

Sometimes they want me to not tell them, but write it down, put it in an envelope, and give it to them. I do that.

For those that do want to know, I try to find out, but I always say I might be wrong. I think you have to be very careful, particularly in calling a girl. Many times I call it a girl at the beginning of the scan, only to change my mind later in the scan when it becomes obvious it is a boy.

I am just beginning to try to determine gender at 13 weeks based on the angle of the phallus.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
