Re: Agenesis of the corpus callosum and mid sagittal views of the fetal brainFrom: Paula S. Woletz, RDMS, RDCS, MPH (woletzps@umdnj.edu)Wed Sep 8 18:16:16 1999
We don't routinely screen for agenesis of the corpus callosum, but when there is the suspicion (or a significant history), we've been using the mid sagittal views with a great deal of success. It's not always obtainable, but sometimes with a vertex presentation, transvaginal scans work well. We augment the 2D image with the use of color flow and color power Doppler. In cases of ACC, we've noted the absence of the pericallosal artery. (Which raises the question of whether the corpus callosum fails to develop because of abnormal vasculature or whether the development of the pericallosal artery is affected by ACC--which comes first, the chicken or the egg?) We've begun a study to see how early we can see the corpus callosum on mid sagittal scans, and which is visualized earlier, the corpus callosum on gray scale or the pericallosal artery on color Doppler. I don't have information on the incidence of colpocephaly associated with ACC, but the finding of colpocephaly (as well as Dandy Walker malformations and variants) is often what makes us look for ACC in the first place. I hope this is helpful. Regards, Paula

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
