Fetal Frenulum

My son will be 4 month old on Sept 9. Our Dr. wants to snip the frenulum at his 4 month checkup. She has indicated they do not numb this area with anything. My son is still nursing and thriving well (over 16lbs). Is it necessary to have this procedure done? What are the pro's and con's? I think the only thing holding me back from having this done is the fact I have a very difficult time inflicting pain upon my child. Is there any topic anesthetic they can put on or should I just try some baby oragel?

Any information would be appreciated.

Respectfully - Kris H.
