Re: Hyperechoic bladder with frequencyFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@exchange.uams.edu)Wed May 26 09:09:40 1999
An image would be nice to look at... I have never seen a full bladder that looks like this sounds. I agree that most have overlooked the bladder sonography. I have looked at more than a few female bladders using sonography. In fact Dr. Hennigan and I published the first (labeled) sonograph of the internal female urethra. See: Hennigan & DuBose; Sonography of the normal female urethra. AJR 1985: 145:839-841, also de Gonzales, Cosgrove, Joseph et al: The appearances on ultrasound of the female urethral sphincter. Br J Radiology 1988; 61:687-690. In addition the use of color ureteral-vesicle urine jets have a characteristic appearance. The jets normally fire randomly, 2-3 times a minute in hydrated adults, in an inferiormedial direction. They are best observed by the transverse transabdominal plane of view from a superpubic position and angling under the pubic bone. Use a high sensitivity (low velocity) color Doppler setting. Abnormal directions of jets and a "spraying" rather than a "flame like" jet has been observed with cystitis and ureteroceles. See: Garza, DuBose, Hill, et al: Evaluating Ureteral Jets with Color Doppler in Adults; J Diag Med Sonography 1991, 7:198-200. We will be looking forward to images and follow-up. Peace, Terry J. Can't help thinking this is either interstitial cystitis or other intrinsic bladder path. Art

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
