Re: What is a Cornual Pregnancy??? YikesFrom: James S Smeltzer MD (gaperina@mindspring.com)Sun May 23 08:54:04 1999
KNIX, If something looks gross to you, perhaps it is because you don't know much about the field. YOUR point was?????? MY point was that a pregnancy in a non-blind uterine cornu is at increased risk for incompetent cervix & preterm, but not life-threatening to the mother. An interstitial ectopic is recognizeable by the bulging out of the uterus - giving the appearance of mickey mouse's ear - a little picture EVERY OB sonographer should have in their brain. Perhaps I was not clear about that part. As a sonographer knowing that picture is VERY important because the natural history of these is to get to about 14-16 weeks and rupture catastrophically (every state has a few women die every year from ectopics - and these are the ones that die). The TREATMENT [This WEB site IS called OBGYN.net] is very gratifying because it saves the mother's life by the quite simple operation that is wedge resection of the cornu and 3 to 5 stitches to close it. My intent was to reinforce the little picture of the mickey mouse ear, the importance of immediate treatment, the simplicity of the operation & the high we get from saving a life -- your comment leads me to believe that I was not sufficiently clear to help you understand these things. You may not understand the high that comes from saving a life with 3 stitches. If this part gets to you, please hang at soundadvice@listbox.com, because it is a legitimate part of what we do as OBGYNs & a part we really like.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
