Re: Informed Consent for prenatal ultrasound

When I was faced with having to get an "Informed Consent" (nothing more than a surgical consent form with one line typed in that ultrasound isn't 100% accurate), I got so many questions from the 2 or 3 patients I tried it with, that I stopped doing it. They wanted to know everything, including why did they have to sign it now when they never had to before...was there something wrong...stuff like that. I couldn't very well tell them it was because the Dr. didn't want to get sued if I missed something. And the Dr. wouldn't come in to talk to them, which made things more uncomfortable. And think about this....if we can't tell the sex, or get a cool pic of the face for the photo album, doesn't it occur to them that there could be other things we can't see?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
