Dear Dr. Abubakar, Thanks for your inquiry.

Since you are performing family practice, I assume that you are learning general sonography, including abdominal, obstetrical and gynecological. Does the machine also have Doppler capabilities? Do you also need vascular and cardiac information? What kind of machine do you have?

My first suggestion would be to go to the http://wwweb and search for the manufacturer of your machine, most have Web pages now. They may be able to supply you with information specific to the machine. Be sure to search through the OBGYN.net site for the manufacturer's name.

For video tapes, I would suggest contacting the AIUM, which has an extensive collection of teaching tapes on sonography. http://www.aium.org/ <http://www.aium.org/>

Also, look over the OBGYN.net site for educational information... there is quite a lot. On http://www.obgyn.net/us/us.htm <http://www.obgyn.net/us/us.htm> use the "Search" function at the bottom of each page to search for specific terms for which you need information.

In addition I am sure there are others here who can assist you also.

If you have some specific questions, we can also help you with those. This is the best use of the http://wwweb. I want to encourage you in your studies, as one who taught my self sonography I know that it can be done, but it takes a lot of work and a real desire. But it is has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any question concerning sonography.

I am family doctor practicing medicine in a rural hospital, Somalia. I am the only doctor in the hospital. Recently, one of my colleagues at Johns Hopkins donated to my hospital an ultrasound machine. However, I don't have any formal training to perform either Ob/GYn or any other organs. I am trying to educate myself through watching videos, CD-ROM, books, lecture notes, etc. Neither my hospital nor myself can afford to go overseas training and there is no formal ultrasound training in my country. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone can suggest me any kind of good educational materials such as ultrasound videos, and any other materials that you may think will help me to perform the basic ultrasound.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
