Re: GastoschisisFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@exchange.uams.edu)Tue May 4 12:09:00 1999
One of my favorite textbooks for fetal anomalies is Roger C. Sanders' Structural Fetal Abnormalities: The Total Picture, Mosby, 1996, ISBN: 0-8151-7838-7. Starting on page 140 the occurrence of gastroschisis is given as 1 out of 4,000 births (M1:F1). It goes on to state that "the etiology is probably heterogeneous with some cases resulting from vascular accident or error in development of the right omphalomesenteric artery leading to infarction and necrosis at the base of the umbilical cord." In the Prognosis section is stated " Liveborns have a greater than 90% survival rate with modern surgical treatment and neonatal intensive care." There is more, but this should help. I can't retype Dr. Sanders' entire book. Good luck. Peace, Terry J. It was a single fetus with Gastroschisis. No other anomalies found. Gastroschisis was diagnosed during her previous pregnancy (around 1 year before) also, which was terminated at 28 week of gestation. Now I would like to ask a few questions regarding gastroschisis. 1. What is the most commen cause of gastroschisis ? 2. Is the recurrence of gastroschisis very common? 3. Is there any possiblity of intrauterine therapy for fetus with gastroschisis, if yes, where it is available? 4. What can be done to avoid the recurrence of gastroschisis during next pregnancy? I would appreciate, if you send me list of literature regarding gastroschisis. Thank you very much. Sincerely Dr. Basanta Lall Shrestha Ultrasonic Diagnostic & Research Centre P. O.
