Research Projects was Re: Yolk sac

After sleeping and thinking about a large study of Yolk Sac measurements I am starting to wonder what the real purpose would be. Since Dr. Lyons, and others, have already published valid studies of the inside diameters, would there be a purpose to revisiting the outer diameter measurements? Would we be reinventing the wheel?

There might be some reason to study both inside and outside measurements in the same population to compare their variability, and I think that issue would be better studied in a smaller, controlled study. Reverberation and resolution do not appear to be problems when visualizing the yolk sac via endovaginal transducers. I am not convinced that outside measurements will yield a significant difference in detected pathologies from what is found with inside measurements.

While I am very interested in conducting some research using the Ultrasound section of OBGYN.net to see what we might learn, I am not certain that this particular question would be all that useful. It seems that a better project would be to try to identify some very rare pathologies/processes that could only be found in large numbers in a global study. We may have a good start by looking at the variations of uterine synechia in pregnancy, and outcomes. Particularly any bad outcomes if there are any documented. Other wise I am less enthusiastic to use what is a powerful graphic communication medium and a global population to try to repeat research already done.

Perhaps our energies would be better served to begin a registry/gallery of the varied appearances of abnormal yolk sacs and the outcomes, especially if it is possible to get genetic confirmation of what conditions may be associated with these YS.

Perhaps others could help us to define an appropriate research project. We obviously have the potential of gathering information on some very rare conditions in a relatively rapid manner. Thanks for your enthusiastic support.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
