I happen to be a general internist. A patient had a screening ultrasound at 17 weeks that showed a less than 5 mm chorioamniotic separation. everything else looked fine. Apparently she was told that that is an incidental finding and that no further follow up was needed. I could not find much information on medline except for a few case reports, although a few of the cases sounded alarming such as fetal death from an amniotic band. Just how common is this, and is no follow up needed? I would appreciated if someone could shed some light on this topic or point me to some resources.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit.
