Lawson: You're a little gassy......From: MARK LAWSON (lawson98@juno.com)Mon Aug 24 18:31:31 1998
Greetings... always fun to skim the newsgroups.... Sorry to hear that Nancy can blow away the opposite sex..... when did your sex have anything to do with how well you did your school work..... Do you have to be a girl or boy scientist, can't we just be scientific??? Ya know you're getting old when students tell you how to teach them ;-) Build a bridge and get over it..... You think I can go into grand rounds and tell them I'm just brushing my teeth? Suzanne..... I've always liked the line.... "you have just the right amount of gas" eh, eh....... well I can say that in my years (sdms student member 1977 $5 bucks a year) I've never told anyone they were "gassy".... seems to me it's like telling someone they are too fat to scan them..... We say "technically difficult examination"...... but take heart dearheart.... you have put the time in, you have established yourself to be an effective communicator..... With the thousands of people you know intimately you have to expect things to go awry once in a while..... especially at the level of professional involvement you take..... Bravo.... you could of said nothing... rather you took the risk.... Bravo..... The other day we told an established patient about her fetal demise at 20 weeks..... real tuff.... everybody was gone but me..... we worked slow and let her and dad build their defense mechanisms up.... rather than blurt it out we insinuate trouble, wait, explain then they ask the question " we should be seeing a heartbeat ??" Rarely have I ever used the same "technique" of breaking it to "them" twice....each time an individual effort.... each time we as pros wing it..... our colleagues realize that at that level of professional service we can't always get it right.... sometimes something we say or do.... bends them the wrong way.... I've had med students deny gas !!! and I've had wives of patients say "I'll say he got a lot of gas" :-) For the professional sonographer, our work is an interesting journey and since it involves people, their health and their emotions we'll continue to upset once in a great while.... Have no fear.... Save the good letters and move on..... sister.... Me.... I just don't feel right if I don't tick someone off once in a while..... Then you know you're pushing the envelope...... I'll take gassy over the alternative :-)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
