Re: Cisterna Magna. nucal foldFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@exchange.uams.edu)Mon Aug 17 11:20:17 1998
Dear Dawn, thanks for identifying yourself as a sonographer. Please do not take my message as one of superiority. The fact is that the message went to several lists, and I am Chair of the Ultrasound@OBGYN.net <mailto:Ultrasound@OBGYN.net> . On that list we prefer that our fellow professionals in sonography identify themselves. I did not intend to offend, only someone must try to maintain order. We have many people who are not professionals asking questions who do not understand that there is a Women's Health side of the OBGYN.net for those kinds of questions. Since Nancy did not identify herself, I was not sure where her questions belonged. In addition, if you are familiar with the DateLine and PrimeTime TV shows on sonography this past winter you know that there are many people out there using sonography who do not know what they are doing. These people present themselves as sonographers, but they are not. The only way to demonstrate basic knowledge is to take the ARDMS examinations. This is a professional issue. Nancy did ask some very pointed questions. In fact they do not sound like a lay person's questions, but they are so basic that I am fairly sure she is not properly trained to be doing obstetrical sonography. This is my concern. Many are using the equipment (physician's as well as non-physicians) who simply do not know what they are doing. This is really giving sonography a black-eye. I got at least one message from a member of the Ultrasound@OBGYN.net <mailto:Ultrasound@OBGYN.net> Advisory Board who commended me on my response. The intent was to encourage her to get more training, do some basic study in good reference books, and take the ARDMS exams, as I said. Until I hear from Nancy that she is registered by the ARDMS, and was only asking professional questions to the list, then I will stand by my response. I reiterate, this is not intended to be superiority, but professionalism. If you needed surgery, would you want an auto mechanic doing it or a Board Certified Surgeon? If that is superiority, then so be it. Sonography is no different... the public deserves to receive the highest quality sonography possible. If we do not insist on high standards of performance, then sonography will be dumbed down to the point that no one will believe that it is as useful as it really is. Sorry about the delay in responding, I just returned yesterday from 2 weeks vacation. Peace, Terry J. DuBose, M.S., RDMS Chair, Ultrasound@OBGYN.net <mailto:Ultrasound@OBGYN.net> Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor DuBoseTerryJ@Exchange.uams.edu <mailto:DuBoseTerryJ@Exchange.uams.edu> http://www.uams.edu/chrp/dmshome.htm <http://www.uams.edu/chrp/dmshome.htm> VOICE: 501-686-6510 FAX: 501-686-6513 Chair, http://www.obgyn.net/us/us.htm <http://www.obgyn.net/us/us.htm> http://www.io.com/~dubose/ <http://www.io.com/~dubose/> Now is the time for all good folks to come to the aid of the Earth. -----Original Message----- From: Dawn Miller [SMTP:millerd@arends-sons.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 12, 1998 4:42 PM To: Terry J. Nancy sounds like she has at least some training (which is better than many others), and she was smart enough to find this listserv, and has the want and desire to learn!! Don't treat her like an outsider. She may have knowledge that she could share with others, as I'm sure you have knowledge that you could share with her and others!! Let's try to keep this listserv as it is intended-where people can go and ask questions of their peers, and get answers!! Dawn L. Miller RTŪ(M); RDMS (in case you were wondering)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
