I have a question for anybody who is able to answer it. While i was scanning a 20 wk pregnancy I noticed two small cystic like structures on the Choroid Plexus, the patient happens to be a friend of mine and i was wondering if maybe I should do a follow up scan on her after 26 wks or is it not a major thing? Thank you. Amber Synan Ultrasound Diagnostic School Pittsburgh, PA

Amber, For the best of our knowledge choroid plexus cysts are benign and common lesions. These cysts can be found in fetuses between 16 & 21 weeks of gestational age. They should regress as pregnancy progresses (23rd week and on). Choroid plexus cysts can be unilateral or bilateral. The size of the cyst varies but can range from 0.5 to 2 cm. There are some articles in the literature that relate the size of the cyst to chromosomal abnormalities. The larger the cyst (> 1 cm), the more likely the association with chromosomal abnormalities. On the other hand, there have been other articles that associate small choroid plexus cysts with chromosomal abnormalities.

It is important that the fetus undergoes detailed ultrasound examination by a skilled and experienced sonographer. Even sometimes it is recommended that the the patient should be referred for genetic screening (if regression or resolution is not seen by 25-26 weeks).

In my experience, I have seen cysts that persisted after delivery. The babies were normal.

I hope I answered your question or concern. Good luck. Hamad Ghazle, MS, RDMS Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Rochester Instiute of Technology Rochester, NY (hhgscl@rit.edu)
