Be aware that there have been some very educated and dedicated people working on these issues for some time. It won;t happen overnight and you must take into consideration the entire group of individual Sonographers in their current educational status as well as those who may join us in the future. Does the profession of Sonography require a BS degree in terms of knowledge to perform the required exams...and does having a BS degree help you scan patients better if you not have the eye/hand/brain coordination to perform these scans? Will having the BS as a requirement for the future help to elevate the profession in the eyes of government regulators/MD's/Insurance payors....Yes. Let's do it in a way that protects all Sonographers who are currently Registered through grandfathering and continuing educational requirements. Consider that in many states basic nursing does not require a BS or continuing educational standadrs to practice. Good luck from a Sonographer of 37 years. > >Sincerely, > >Fred A Chavez RDMS, RVT, RDCS, ET > >-----Original Message----- >From: Audrey <audreyfleming@worldwidezest.com> >To: Multiple recipients of list ULTRASOUND <ultrasound@mail.obgyn.net> >Sent: Fri, 10 Apr 2009 5:50 pm >Subject: Re: FW: NM Sonography Licensure Bill Signed into Law > >This can only be a good thing. > >I have heard some people get upset about this. However, I have seen for myself that NOT ALL vascular techs know what they are doing. We recently had to hire traveling techs with RVT credentials who didn't know how to perform the studies. This came back to bite us several years later when a patient would return for a f/u. Our permenant tech would perform the study and get different results. We had 5 out of 7 travelers who were inadequate. I myself work in an accredited lab which I helped to get that accreditation. I have worked in my vascular lab for over 20 years. Our MD's have the utmost respect for my abilities and treat their patients from my test results. I have been trying to pass my boards for several years but failed by a few points. I am in fear of losing everything if I cannot pass the boards. Don't misunderstand what I am stating. I obviously work with excellent RVTs, however, there are people who can pass a test but can't apply or do the studies. With my experience of 20 years plus, I feel there should be a grandfather law incorporated in the bill. Working in an accredited lab under the supervision of an RVT and obtaining the recommended amount of CME's. I will continue to pass my boards but I live in fear of my future. If I were the patient, I would rahter have someone with 20 years experience doing my study than someone who passed the test with very little knowledge of performing the study.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
