Re: CMEs for AIUM accreditationFrom: jworrall@alaska.netThu Jan 22 10:00:39 2009
I suspect a busy radiologist in a hospital practice makes a good deal more than twice what the sonographer makes. Putting on a major meeting like the AIUM meeting is a huge undertaking, and has become a major industry. Not only are there big expenses from the venue, but there are all sorts of specialists to be paid for their work: the audio/video people for example. And expenses for everything have gone up. And most likely the AIUM does hope to make a profit on the meetings. But you are correct, the cost of attending one of these major meetings (or, to put it another way, the cost of earning your CME credit hours by attending a meeting rather than trying to get through a DVD at home) has gone up significantly. I have recently made a major decision along the path of life: I am NOT going to seek reaccreditation of my practice from the AIUM. I am getting old and it just looms as too much work, and a considerable expense. However, CME credits are required if I want to keep my Alaskan State Medical License. I have no success at all in earning CME credits at home: I order the DVDs but never get around to watching them. So I have to go to meetings. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
