Re: fetal hairFrom: Victoria Hospodar Valentine (vvalentine4@comcast.net)Tue May 15 09:20:02 2007
Interesting that you mention that. I had a patient just a few weeks ago who was 35.3 weeks by sono, and this was her first exam. The fetus was in vertex presentation and the cervical area showed thickening and what appeared to be edema within the skin. It was very difficult to get clear pictures due to the presentation and maternal size. The radiologist suggested that it may be hair, but I saw no movement of strands and the borders appeared to be one with the remainder of the skin. I will check with the OB and see if she has delivered and if there were any abnormalities. In addition the fetus' bladder was quite distended, but there were no ancillary findings of bladder outlet obstruction, and it was suggested that the patient be sent to a specialized facility for further testing.
