Re: US guided proceduresFrom: Allen Worrall (jworrall@alaska.net)Tue Oct 3 14:39:56 2006
I would think it important to use sterile gel just from a medical legal point of view even if there were no concerns about nonsterile gel contributing to an infection. The same concerns may not exist in Malaysia. The only invasive procedure I am involved with is providing ultrasound guidance for amniocentesis. I use nonsterile gel when I am first scanning, and when the ob doctor is picking a spot. Then, while he is prepping the abdomen with Betadine, I place the transducer in a sterile sheath and apply sterile gel to the outside of the sheath. Then I try to follow the passage of the needle or locate the needle once it is in place. Allen

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
