I don't think so. It will depend upon how sonography goes in the future... if it goes to a laissez-faire economy, then sonographers can do that for which they are willing to take responsibility, and many will go to the baby studio model. If we go to some kind of single payer government controlled system, then who knows how it will go. I think outsourcing is here to stay, at least in corporate medicine and large institutions. For example, emergency after hours call may turn into an overseas reading because it will be day-time there, and the local radiologist can just stay in bed. However, there will have to be someone who understands sonography to operate the machine, even if it is a near automated volume scans... sonographers could evolve into "acoustic anatomists". The real threat to contemporary sonography is the other modalities, MRI, CT... if they can ever get the price down, and make them emergency friendly. Speaking of volume scans, have you seen the last two articles in the "white journal"? The next to the last is the short bit about the cover image, "Distended fetal jugular lymphatic sacks in 1st trimester". The last article is "Examination of the fetal heart by 4D STIC." Be sure to go to the electronic and download the video clips... takes some memory... there are 14. Some are small, some larger. The largest is 77 megabytes. I would not recommend the downloads on dial-up. It was good to see you and visit at AIUM. Terry Terry J. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
