Mr. DuBose,

Have Tom Cruise buy himself a CT scanner or MRI and see what happens when he carries a screwdriver with him to the MRI.

I agree that, in Cruise's case, there is no real harm done. assuming the fetus is normal and needs no further care.

However, the impression this gives to the public is that sonography is simple and ANYONE can do it effectively; and there is no need for any education beyond reading the users' manual.

It also sets a precedent for ignoring the FDA and the medical rules/regulations that have good reasoning behind them.

Newsflash -- the rich get better (and / or more) medical care than the rest of us. If Mr. Scientology is doing is own scans in lieu of proper scans, then there's no helping him anyway. Otherwise, no harm done IMHO. Genuine concerns about fetal damage from diagnostic soundwaves are a total absurdity. I can't believe anyone who does ultrasound for a living seriously believes this. There's much more harm done by ACR representatives voicing such ridiculous concerns, thereby possibly deterring patients from getting needed scans. Personally, I'm more worried about celebrities buying their way up the transplant list.

Thanks Terry for the heads up! Just in from Australia, but I've already responded to MSNBC's "Maternity Madness Mailbag" option at the end of the article. I hope MSNBC is inundated by responses from the entire sonography community.

Cruise's actions set a bad example/precedence for those with the finances to afford their own in-home ultrasound units. Forget the FDA, if/when they get around to investigating this, the baby will be eligible for pre-school.

Can't help wondering where the Cruise/Holmes obstetrician is in all of this? Hopefully, he/she is guiding and advising this couple appropriately.

Let's hope Mr. Cruise turns that transducer over to a competent registered sonographer or physician/sonologist very soon.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit.
