Re: Tom Cruise Ultrasound Maven

Guys, this is America, not AMERIKA! If he needs help with his machine - and he should get a good professional to help him look at this baby - I would volunteer to do this, if he would play with my kids, and sign a few autographs.

As a sonologist, perinatologist and American, I believe that the proven beneficial effects on parent-infant bonding justify the theoretical risks of diagnostic ultrasound. My main objections to "botique" sonograms are that they discriminate against the poor, they do not provide the usual quality assurance measures, and they do not address legitimate medical needs that are satisfied by quality sonography.

We tape on request for that reason. We also provide keepsake photos. In these days of chaotic fragmented lives, the most important determinate of good child outcomes (ALL of our main objective) is a persistant unconditional positive parent child relationship. This STARTS with a firm positive parent-infant bond. This can start with a quality sonogram, IMHO. If you do not realize that this is part of your mission, you are in the wrong line of work.

Part of the reason that the "botique" sonogram business exists is that WE ARE NOT CONSISTENTLY DOING OUR JOB in this regard. Tom Cruise shows us this & rather than accepting our lesson with love and humility, we jump his ass. We are a bunch of pompous idiots!

One of the best things I ever did in my career was to train a nurse and minister's wife who has turned around and is training people nationally from crisis pregnancy centers on the use of sonography in their work. I am pro choice in believing a woman should have choice of what happens to her body, but I am definitely pro life in my personal action, and in believing that it is legitimate use of ultrasound to show a woman the truth about the child she is carrying.

If I had Tom Cruise's money, I would find someone with knowledge to guide me and do what he did. I would also get a pro job a couple of times during the pregnancy.

Please forgive the rant, but our forefathers died that we should be free. The only justifiable defense of the removal of any freedom is an overriding public good that necessarily conflicts with our inherent private rights - child immunizations and traffic laws for example. I do not see this being the case regarding sonography.

GO TOM!

Tom Cruise is performing sonograms. No report on his fees or where he obtained the machine. The FDA should be interested since this flies in the face of an FDA directive.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
