Re: IVF TV Oocyte RetrievalFrom: James Smeltzer (James.Smeltzer@wellstar.org)Mon Aug 22 10:18:35 2005
Hi, Average penile length at tumescence is 12.5 cm +/- 2 cm among most populations studied and 15 cm among normal Germans. Assuming that normal vaginas accomodate these, minimum design length to accomodate most normal vaginal lengths would be about 17 to 18 cm. The probe needs to be of sufficient length to "trap" the ovary against the sacrum, where it is easier to puncture. You must allow for some length outside the vagina but permit normal needles to be used with some needle outside the sheath. One typical needle is 33 cm http://www.attiehmedico.com/pages/Companies/wallace/oocyte_recovery_systems.htm, and may extend 2 cm into the ovary, allow a space of 2 cm, and thus design lenth would be 18 cm to 24 cm with the needle sheath being longer. The extra needle sheath length is for sterility. The needle is placed after to particular follicle is targeted with sheath and probe. The oocyte is aspirated into the needle but not out of the needle, the needle removed and the oocyte ejected. Sheath is longer than probe to facilitate sterile technique and finding the sheath. An Iowa type trumpet may facilitate this. It has been a very long time since I learned this and taught it to my endocrinologist colleagues who now are way beyond my technique. Hire one as a consultant to try your prototype. Jim

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
