I look forward to seeing the articles comments on non diagnostic obstetric sonography. My editorial published in the Nov/Dec JDMS expressed my concern that sonography as a diagnostic tool and the importance of the sonographer have been lost in the hand waving and concern for the patient wanting to see their baby in 3D. We have forgotten we created this environment, the patient desiring images. I quote Dr. Janelle Taylor, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Washington, " Given the way obstetrical ultrasound is actually practiced in the US today, you can't get away from the entertainment/baby picture aspect of the technology in medical practice, any more than you can get away from the medical/diagnostic aspect in entertainment ultrasound."

I hope our professional organizations address the issue, once again, with the focus of educating the patient/consumer as to who holds the transducer is important and what to expect from sonography. The fear tactics aren't working.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
