Re: JAMA articleFrom: Terry DuBose (terrydubose@sbcglobal.net)Tue Jan 4 11:27:05 2005
I see a couple of problems with the wording of the page: "4. All diagnostic ultrasound examinations and keepsake ultrasounds are performed by RDMS-certified or RDMS-eligible sonographers, sonologists, or licensed medical practitioners." The ARDMS does not recognize "RDMS-eligible sonographers" because that could be a person who met the minimum requirements to sit for the exam, but failed to pass. They are still eligible to sit, but may not know an amniotic band from a synechia. “8. Provision of a keepsake ultrasound follows the ALARA principle of ultrasound exposure: As Low As Reasonably Achievable. “ How is this possibly ALARA, unless they only provide the diagnostic images to the patient. This is obviously going to continue to go on… at least they are using registered Sonographers… wonder how they assure that the physician in charge knows what they are looking at? One of the key points is that amusement and diagnosis may not be mutually exclusive. Berkeley Geddes, an originator of online job search site FlipDog.com, started Geddes Keepsake Inc as a way to incoporate "keepsake" services into Diagnostic Labs. More info to be found here - http://www.geddeskeepsake.com. oh - just want to say that i am in no way affiliated with Geddes. Any thoughts? art

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
