Yolk sac number in multiple gestations (monochorionic)

While EV scanning with a student, an early IUP (5.1 wks by GSD) was seen- a single gestational sac containing 3 cystic structures; the largest of which was 9mm. The question arose: ? In a single gestational sac (presumably a monochorionic gestation) is it possible to have 3 yolk sacs, or can this be a combination of a yolk sac, vitelline membrane plus possibly an early amniotic membrane. ? No embyronic pole was seen (yet), no bHCG was available, however LMP and GSD placed this probable early IUP at 5 weeks.

Please forgive my hazy ignorance of embryology (and spelling).

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
