Pat, by changes blood properties, do you mean by fetal Doppler study?

I do remember 10 years or so ago there was some discussion of the fetus being more active about an hour after the mother took in sugars. Some believed, me included, that doing a BPP after the mother had sugar would cause the fetus to be more active and therefore shorten the time to register a reactive BPP. However, Walla CA & Platt LD; "Observing Fetal Maturation Through Fetal Movement and Fetal Breathing:, Chapter 26 in: Berman MC, Editor: DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY: A Guide to Clinical Practice, Vol. 1; J.B. Lippincott Company, 1991, Philadelphia; p. 445-457, state that: "Feeding a patient prior to an ultrasound examination will not increase the chance of observing fetal movements".

While I have not seen anything about fetal blood changes associated with Doppler. Others have suggested that the umbilical artery Doppler should be added to the BPP. (James DK, Parker MJ, and Smoleniec JS; "Comprehensive fetal assessment with three ultrasonographic characteristics"; Am J Obstet Gynecol, 1992; 166:1486-1495.) Perhaps they have pubished some later findings.

Thanks, Terry J DuBose

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
