Dr. Jeanty, We are using WebCT for delivering course work, and have been for 4 years now, but only the classes for Senior students so far. Some courses have the content written by the faculty, students read, have some case based problems and assignments, and discuss via the "discussion groups" on WebCT. Other courses are topic assignments for research, discussion, and term papers. The faculty participate in the discussions and keep them on track. Quizzes and examinations are via Web type "Forms" on WebCT, and the grades are automatically entered into the Grade Book. Once we have the courses designed and posted, then it would be great to have luminaries such as yourself to participate.

All of our courses are "asynchronous", which means the students' participation is according to their own schedule. Before we started our first Web course in August 1998, I took a Web based course in epidemiology to see how it worked... it was taught "synchronously", which meant all 20 students logged on Wednesday evening at the same time and typed furiously at each other for 3 hours, then it would suddenly stop... about the time you became brain-dead. We didn't have time to do lit searches, read, or give much thought to the discussions... not a good learning experience. So all our assignments are weekly or longer, and the students can log on at their leisure to post papers or discussion. Some who may be on call or are night owls may send in assignments at 3:00 AM, we notice the time/date stamps just to see how they are doing on deadlines.

When the ISOUG was in Edinburgh, Scotland, we were just starting our first Web based course (Fall, 1998). With the travel time and getting the OBGYN.net CyberCafe up and running, it was about 4 days before I could log on again. I was concerned that the course had fallen flat without my participation (we faculty think learning can't happen without us :-), but when I finally got logged in it was good to see the students were carrying on great... having good discussions of the material. It was gratifying to see that the Web courses did work, as well as being able to access the course from anywhere in the World.

Now we just have to get another faculty member so we can add the rest of the courses...

Thanks for the offer to assist... we will keep you in mind, and hold you to it! ;-) You will be amazed at the number of our students who have used TheFetus for references.

Thanks, Terry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
