Re: Objectionable mailings

This seems like a good option; however, I do NOT HAVE TIME for
>"manual screening and time consuming"
all messages and re-sending them. It is all I can do to highlight groups and delete.
I don't know if OBGYN.net has enough "extra" employee time to do this or not.
Peace, Terry

When those sneakers get tired, we can reintroduce open participation. Of course that would mean "manual screening and time consuming".

>The problem of SPAM is becoming much worse over the entire internet. The perpetrators have learned how to make their spam appear to come from legitimate addresses such as obgyn.net, yahoo.com, msn.com. This makes it difficult for Spam filters to work: although I could tell my filter to "kill" all mail from obgyn.net, msn.com, yahoo.com, I would be throwing the baby out with the bath water. And the spamers can change the overall address with each mailing. For example, if I filter on [
>mailto:12345@yahoo.com ]12345@yahoo.com my filter will stop all mail with that address. But the next mailing from the perp will be from [ mailto:22345@yahoo.com ]22345@yahoo.com, and my filter will let it through. I then create a new filter for [ mailto:22345@yahoo.com ]22345@yahoo.com, but the perps will continue to use a different address. The spam filter helps, but recently I have noted more and more spam gets through the filter.

>Dear Sue, I am probably as good as any to ask about this... me and the folks in Austin... Bruce, Roberta, et al. This issue first came up soon after OBGYN-L went on the web. Unfortunately, as you say "Whoever sends them is getting sneakier so it's difficult to filter them out with software rules". Bruce and crew try to filter them, but they are overwhelming.

>The problem is not unique to OBGYN.net, but exists on any large, successful, OPEN ACCESS, list. We discussed going behind a wall and charging a fee about 5 years ago, but that adds to the expense and limits access. The problem is worse now. It is difficult enough with patients who should be seeing a medical person rather than asking for advice long distance, but the SPAM is truly obnoxious.

>Legislation has been proposed in Washington (not that all SPAM originates in the USA), but so far the "business interests" like the Chambers of Commerce organization have opposed limiting SPAM because they call it "advertising". With our current administration being a corporate culture, I do not expect to see much support for limiting any kind of commerce. Please don't blame the American people, most of us did not vote for Bush... and more will not soon. My apologies to any Republicans here,
