Dear Sue, I am probably as good as any to ask about this... me and the
folks in Austin... Bruce, Roberta, et al. This issue first came up soon
after OBGYN-L went on the web. Unfortunately, as you say "Whoever sends
them is getting sneakier so it's difficult to filter them out with
software rules". Bruce and crew try to filter them, but they are
overwhelming.
The problem is not unique to OBGYN.net, but exists on any large,
successful, OPEN ACCESS, list. We discussed going behind a wall and
charging a fee about 5 years ago, but that adds to the expense and limits
access. The problem is worse now. It is difficult enough with patients
who should be seeing a medical person rather than asking for advice long
distance, but the SPAM is truly obnoxious.
Legislation has been proposed in Washington (not that all SPAM originates
in the USA), but so far the "business interests" like the Chambers of
Commerce organization have opposed limiting SPAM because they call it
"advertising". With our current administration being a corporate
culture, I do not expect to see much support for limiting any kind of
commerce. Please don't blame the American people, most of us did not
vote for Bush... and more will not soon. My apologies to any Republicans
here, and I don't mean to introduce polemics to an ultrasound discussion
group, but this is becoming a serious problem. Until the corporate
culture currently in control of the USA's administration says stop, I see
little hope.
If anyone has suggestions or wants to pay for a lobbying group to oppose
the Chambers of Commerce, et al... please suggest what to do.
