Re: US vs the World re. Women's reproductive health servicesFrom: Ann Polin (apolin@bcc.ctc.edu)Tue Dec 17 10:43:30 2002
Terry and Colleagues - This is such an important statement. It is a shame that the significance of it is not appreciated by the many who are in a position to do something about it. And, the Subject line above could more aptly be written, "US vs the World re: Health Services". I have seen first-hand "health services" in the developing countries of our world. While patients in the U.S. might mull over heavy issues like "should I have a CT or an MRI?" there are patients in many other countries who can't even afford basic lab tests - Countless times during my ultrasound scanning days in Ghana I ordered and paid for a pregnancy test for patients who didn't have any money. In many of the facilities in these countries, health care consists of nothing more than a doctor and a stethoscope trying to diagnosis and treat patients in a grey concrete room, without benefit of lab tests, x-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI scans, fancy surgery suites, and the expanse of technological advances and medical expertise that most of us take for granted in the U.S. Until there is more public awareness, enlightened administrative policy, and increased humanitarian funding much of the world (except, of course, for the U.S.A.) will be left in the dark when in comes to health care.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
