First a disclaimer -- I am NOT about to give medical advice. OK?

This is a good argument against routine ultrasound. 5 cm fibroids are quite common, and do usually do not require treatment unless causing pain or bleeding. They usually do not cause problems in pregnancy. Don't let anyone try to do surgery without a good reason. I manage patients with fibroids all the time. It is generally much ado about nothing, in this case possibly by un- or marginally indicated ultrasound. Anyone disagree? There is a chapter on this subject in Reiss' book "The mother and the fetus" that explains this well.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
