Re: Embryonic Heart Rate @ 8 weeksFrom: Terry J. DuBose (duboseterryj@uams.edu)Tue Dec 3 08:44:05 2002
Dr. Ryan, here is what a new textbook says about arrhythmias... "Fetal Dysrhythmias: Irregular patterns of fetal heart rhythms are a frequent finding. Short periods of tachycardia, bradycardia, and ectopic beats are very commonly seen and, in the vast majority of cases, have no clinical significance. A sustained bradycardia of less than 100 beats per minute, a sustained tachycardia of of more than 200 beats per minute, and irregular beats occurring more than 1 in 10 should be considered abnormal and require further investigation." Fleischer, Manning, Jeanty, & Romero: Sonography in Obstetrics & Gynecology 6th Ed. McGraw-Hill 2001, p. 172ff. The text continues for a few pages covering in detail Premature Atrial & Ventricular Contractions, Supraventricular Tachyarrhythmias, Atrioventricular Block, as well as other prenatal cardiac diagnoses. You can also find more information on http://www.OBGYN.net... do a search on "arrhythmias". I got 46 hits, most dealing with adults, but several on the fetus. Hope this helps. Peace, Terry J DuBose, M.S., RDMS

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
