However, the "gestational age" is a convention and a bit of a misnomer. According to most English dictionaries "gestation" means "in the uterus". But in conventional medicine "gestational age" is dated from the last menstrual period, which is about 2 weeks before ovulation and conception. This has lead to confusion for the public. Ever have a couple who upon hearing the "gestational age", and after a moment of calculation, the husband blurt out "I was out of town that week!"? There is a short story on OBGYN.net trying to illustrate this problem for the public. There have been several proposals to use something other than the LMP for dating the pregnancy. In my book (Fetal Sonography) some tables have both "conceptual ages" as well as "gestational ages" shown. This past week at the SDMS 2002 Annual Conference in Atlanta, one lecturer proposed we should use "weeks menstrual age" (WMA) for more clarity. Is this what you were asking? The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
