Breast AbscessFrom: Maharaj, Raksha (rmaharaj@usaid.gov)Fri Sep 27 04:17:08 2002
Good Morning, Firstly, I am a 30 year old female who has had seven breast operations. It all started in 1999 when I had the first abscess removed from my right breast. Since then I have had six other operations on exactly the same spot. The last abscess was removed on 5 July 2002 - an open wound was left for it to drain. Then on 17 August 2002 blood and fluids were oozing from the wound and I had to undergo a further operation. I then underwent a further op on 10 September 2002 to remove the folding in skin and scar tissue which was causing me much pain and discomfort. A blood drain was put in for three days. On my last visit to the doctor I was advised that I will have to consult a plastic surgeon. The reason being is that the skin on either sides of the operation wound is once again folding in and forming a hard mass at the bottom of the breast. I am informed that this mass is the prime area for bacteria to set in and hence another abscess to form. My doctor wants the opinion of the Plastic Surgeon as to whether a bigger excision is necessary to remove the excess fibroid and skin or whether conventional medical treatment should continue. I am currently on Taradol pain killers and Tegretol for the desensitizing the ducts in the affected area. Please assist me with whatever information you may have as regards possible treatments of this problem. Looking forward to your response. Kind Regards, Raksha Maharaj USAID/South Africa Front Office Tel: 12-27-323-8869 ext. 473 Fax: 12-27-238-4412

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
