Ted

try http://gemedicalsystems.com/rad/us/4d/4d_sitequest.html?address=&city=&state=CA&zip go down the list - you'll see 'em.

as far as the GE ad campaign - let's compare this to GE's other campaigns. with their ct scanner - they show a guy in a massive car accident whose emergency trauma care is facilitated by the rapidity at which images are acquired.

with their notebook scanner which Kathleen so rightly noted just might be the sleeper of the bunch, they show a guy going to remote Africa to allow outreach even to those areas remote from primary let alone tertiary hospitals. these, no one would argue, are examples of technology enhancing medical care.

now look at the 4D campaign. did they pick an anxious couple at risk for neural tube defect? did they demonstrate the facilitated diagnosis of uterine malformations or the precise location of an interstitial pregnancy? no - we have simply cute baby pictures and that's it. now - i am not belittling the value of families bonding with their offspring - heck we all give photos, tapes etc to patients as keepsakes but all as part of a quality exam - not as a be all end all in itself.

i find the "ask your doctor about 4d" mantra akin to "ask your doctor about cocaine."

finally - there is the flip side of the ad campaign. we received a call from a woman who cannot watch television without breaking down. it seems she suffered her nth miscarriage and the ge ad pushed her off the deep end.

if we are serious about our stance on entertainment fetal sonography, i would think we should collectively and personally explain to ge exactly how we feel. additionally, the fda who have also taken a stand on this issue should be contacted.

the ultimate gall - for those who do battle with managed care on a daily basis - is that the same folks who fuss about their copayment have no problem forking over cash to those folks who have absolutely no interest in their welfare or that of their unborn.

and now i descend from the soapbox with a forrest gump - "and that's all i have to say about that."

as always just my opinion - i could be wrong.
