FW: [OB/GYN (OB)] RE: Fetal FotosFrom: DuBose, Terry (DuboseTerryJ@uams.edu)Tue Jun 25 18:13:12 2002
This one just came across the SDMS Web Forums. Peace, Terry J. DuBose, M.S., RDMS Assistant Professor & Director, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program CHRP, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Little Rock, Arkansas, USA 501-686-6510 http://www.io.com/~dubose/ http://www.uams.edu/CHRP/dmshome.htm http://www.obgyn.net/us/panel/panel.htm -----Original Message----- From: webmaster@sdms.org [mailto:webmaster@sdms.org] Sent: Tuesday, June 25, 2002 4:43 PM To: forums@sdms.org Subject: [OB/GYN (OB)] RE: Fetal Fotos There has been a new posting in the SDMS Discussion Forums Written by: Pamela J. Mason link.asp?TOPIC_IDH5 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MESSAGE: quote: I just received this email from a director of radiology at a nearby hospital. "One of my pregnant xray techs was at Babys R Us this weekend and said there was a company there doing ultasound exams in the middle of the store. She said the women were just laying there with their shirts pulled up for everyone to see. She brought me the promotional card from the company providing this service. It is call Fetal Fotos and says: Capture the innocence of life as it happens. Want to know the sex of your baby? etc. etc. The cost for the video and high quality glossy photos was $75. The tech said there was a legal pad filled with names of women having this one. I find this amazing. How can they do this without an order from a physician? At the bottom, in small print, it does state that this is not to be used for diagnostic purposes and the service is not intended to replace services provided by their OB physician." Ultrasound is a physician-ordered exam. I do not understand how these unethical (and probably illegal) activities continue to occur. What can we do to help the public understand that ultrasound is a complex procedure, only to performed by a skilled sonographer and with a physician's order? Charlotte Orlando, FL

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
