Difficult imagingFrom: Bill King (billking@cros.net)Tue Apr 2 18:07:14 2002
My co-worker and I have wondered if any other sonographers/sonologists have noticed if their patients' with a history of being a moderate to heavy cigarette smoker has an effect on the quality of the scan. I don't even know if you can study any effects that cigarette smoking would have on ultrasound transmission through a patients' body. I know that it seems a little far fetched, but we find that when we scan thin pregnant people who one would think would be an ideal fetal scan, the imaging can be quite difficult on people who are smokers. We wondered if there could be other factors involved, such as maybe a poor diet. Even when these women are well hydrated, it is not easy to obtain good images. Ruth King RT, RDMS Bayshore OB/GYN

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
