Informal Case: Live Ectopic PregnancyFrom: D.Hoekstra (djhoek@softhouse.com)Sun Mar 31 12:51:14 2002
my sister is a 29 yr old female who had an hysterectomy 4 yrs ago. She has recently discovered that, not only does she still have one fallopian tube and ovary, but she is also pregnant. Her Dr. has pushed the fetus up into the ovary and says that the fetus can be carried this way for up to 7 mos. How is this possible without a uterus? What does the umbillical cord attach to? Is there a placenta to feed the fetus? Is there a placenta without a uterus?...etc.. Also, if this is possible, why isn't she on bed rest? Or at least restricted activity? She is approximately 4 mos along and the fetus has a heart rate of @160, and the Dr. says that this procedure, while rare, has been performed before, success unknown.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
