Re: Joe- query about biophysical profileFrom: James S Smeltzer MD (gaperina@mindspring.com)Wed Jan 30 14:12:25 2002
Hi Joe, The test, as described by Manning, includes the presence or absence of fluid (two 1x2 cm pockets), fetal movement (multiple purposeful movements), tone - return to flexion, virtually always present if movement is present, fetal breathing and NST. Fetal breathing is frequently not seen and is not significant if NST is reactive. If neither breathing nor NST are OK, then test is suspicious & needs repeat eithin one day. If breathing, NST not OK and another parameter is not OK as well, then indicates possible fetal compromise, and indication for delivery or continuous or frequent fetal assessment, IMHO. Dr. Arabin also described a SAFE score using doppler as well. Jim Smeltzer

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
