Hi,

There are many unfilled fellowship positions in maternal fetal medicine here. This is a three year program. Many programs are excellent preparation for doing specialized obstetrical sonology but some are not. You should contact the program director directly to ask. Here is a list:

http://www.abog.org/app/mfm.html

This is an excellent way to get trained in all aspects of high risk pregnancy management and prenatal diagnosis. You would qualify to take the RDMS exam, but to obtain board certification in MFM you must first take and pass the general examination in OB-GYN which would require an additional American 3-year residency in OB/GYN - so if you plan to return to the Phillipines, you do not need this board certification.

To come here for training requires a J-1 visa, which is not hard to get but requires you to return home when completed. To stay after that would require a special H-1 visa for fulfilling a special need. A friend did this by working as a sonographer in a hospital which could not find one. He then did an internship and radiology residency and is now chief of sonography at a major teaching hospital, with many awards and publications.

If your desires are more limited and you do not have 3 years, I suggest you can train in one of these programs where you can arrange an international fellowship for a shorter time. One year woiuld be needed to qualify you for RDMS certification. Alternatively you could train for a year in a hospital based practice such as mine, log your experience and reading time, and take the RDMS examination.

Please use the URL provided above for contact information. Alternatively there are women's imaging fellowships in radiology which could also prepare you for both ultrasound and breast sonography and mammography as well. If you have a special interest in a part of OBGYN sonography, you can check out what institutions and people are working in that area by a medline search, and then contacting them directly.

If interested in a hospital bases training, please email me at James.Smeltzer@wellstar.org

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
