I perfectly agrree with Dr. Jeanty. Although there are some reports regarding the association between enlarged gall bladder and increased risk for Down's syndrome, according to my experience in most cases it's a normal variant.

I scanned a G 2, P 1, 32-year old woman today. Size equals dates, anatomical survey appears normal with the exception of an enlarged fetal gall bladder. Fetus is 22 weeks. What causes the gall bladder to enlarge? I searched MEDLINE and came up with one article which states that an enlarged gallbladder at antenatal US does not appear to be associated with a substantially increased risk of chromosomal aneuploidy or biliary tract malformation. But I am still wondering why it would enlarge. There are no overt stones or sludge. Thanks for your help.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
