Enlarged fetal gall bladderFrom: Bill King (billking@cros.net)Thu Dec 27 20:33:45 2001
I scanned a G 2, P 1, 32-year old woman today. Size equals dates, anatomical survey appears normal with the exception of an enlarged fetal gall bladder. Fetus is 22 weeks. What causes the gall bladder to enlarge? I searched MEDLINE and came up with one article which states that an enlarged gallbladder at antenatal US does not appear to be associated with a substantially increased risk of chromosomal aneuploidy or biliary tract malformation. But I am still wondering why it would enlarge. There are no overt stones or sludge. Thanks for your help. Ruth King RT, RDMS Bayshore OB/Gyn Sandusky, Ohio

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
