Re: For profit Gender determination with Ultrasound (NYT article)From: dr nayana parange (nparange@yahoo.com)Wed Aug 15 22:07:17 2001
Hello everybody! u have brought up a subject very close to my heart and in fact it is THE mission of my life to try and curb this practice and make our people aware about the dangers of the altered sex ratio. In my area where I practise, this trend is rampant as people are willing to shell out any amount of money for usg-sex determination and this trend is seen among educated people as well.Actually, this is all because there is a discrimination against women in most of the communities and there is this "Dowry"which has to be given when a girl gets married.Thats why many unscrupulous practitioners try to advertise by telling that "spend rs 500 now instead of rs 5 lacs later!"Many times, the woman undergoing thas procedure does not have any say or any choice in the matter as the family pressure is enormous. There is a law in India prohibiting this heinous crime but since nothing is given in writing to the patient,it is really hard to nab anyone. you can see the article at url-http://www.hindustantimes.com/nonfram/170601/dtLNAT02.asp The situation is really depressing as the patients are happy as long as it is a male fetus,In fact, there was a couple who had confirmed elsewhere that it was a male fetus and they came to me to evaluate the fetus for a routine USG exam and the fetus turned out to have multiple structural anomalies.yet they did not mind as long as it was a male fetus!very frustrating and depressing situation! thanks for your valuable time and taking interest in this issue, all the help is welcome1i would really like to know how to put an end to this situation.with regards,nayana-india

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
